"Untititled"

FINALLY – I’ve seen Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I actually now really regret not seeing it at the cinema. Strange film, in many ways.. I found it very slow in getting off the ground, and a lot of things only really made sense when I watched it with the director’s and screenwriter’s commentary on (oh the wonders of DVD). Very enjoyable though – fantastic action sequences, and very beautiful to watch. As a film I wouldn’t rate it that highly, but as a martial acts movie it ranks up there with the best. Indeed, as an experience I can think […]

"Untititled"

Just back from holiday (in Greece) – feeling tanned and refreshed, so that’s good. 🙂 Excitements? Well, the oz DVDs all worked (hurrah!), and both the Blues Brothers and Aliens are special editions, with extra previously unseen footage. In most of the cases I can understand why they were cut for the theatrical release, but for some of them I can’t! Aliens – well what can I say? Still possibly my “best film of […]

"Aliens (S.E.)"

Well what can I say? Still possibly my “best film of all time” – I have watched it many many times, and can still hardly find any way the film could be improved. This special edition seems to be even longer then the special edition released on VHS a few years ago, but I wouldn’t swear on that.

"Moulin Rouge"

A fantastically clever and well-made film, with some great cinematic techniques and a rocking score. However I have to say I came out of it feeling ‘dirty’ somehow, and very sad.. It has such a sense of squalor and quiet desperation/hopelessness to it that I couldn’t really say I enjoyed it, even though in a technical sense it’s a very good film.
